The following are the system requirements for installing the JDK and the JRE on macOS:
JRE 1.6 and JNI under Mac OS. Fredericmeunier asked on 2009-06-18. Java; Mac OS X; 1 Comment. Last Modified: 2013-11-23. Java is a runtime environment maintained by Oracle that you must install on your Mac to be able to run applications written using the Java programming language. Moreover, Java allows developers to make apps available on multiple operating systems at the same time because Java-based utilities will run. When you install the JDK, it also installs the JRE. However, the system will not replace the current JRE with a lower version. To determine the current JRE version installed on your system, see Determining the JRE Version Installed on macOS. To install an earlier version of the JRE.
Any Intel-based computer running macOS.
Administrator privileges.
You cannot install Java for a single user. Installing the JDK and JRE on macOS is performed on a systemwide basis for all users. Administrator privileges are required to install the JDK and JRE on macOS.
When you install the JDK, it also installs the JRE. However, the system will not replace the current JRE with a lower version.
To determine the current JRE version installed on your system, see Determining the JRE Version Installed on macOS. To install an earlier version of the JRE, you must first uninstall the current version. See Uninstalling the JRE on macOS.
When you install the JRE, you can install only one JRE on your system at a time. The system will not install a JRE that has an earlier version than the current version. Ff8 psp.
To determine the current JRE version installed on your system, see Determining the JRE Version Installed on macOS. To install an earlier version of the JRE, you must first uninstall the current version. See Uninstalling the JRE on macOS.
Note:
Installing a JRE from Oracle will not update
java -version
symlinks or addjava
to your path. To do this, you must install the JDK.
I had such a hard time finding the correct download link for the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.6 for Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.8+), that I decided I would just provide it right here, or if you prefer to download it straight from the mac site. Solar fire 8 download.
Just a tip, if you’d like to make JRE 1.6 the default after you install it, then you will probably want to get the script discussed on this forum post: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=58817
Here is a modified version of the code to work with the 1.6 JRE instead of JDK, name the file changeJRE.sh and make sure you ‘chmod +x changeJRE.sh’ before trying to execute the script.
#!/bin/sh
cd /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions
CURJRE='`readlink Current`'
echo Current JRE version: $CURJRE
if [ '$1' ' ]; then
echo Installed versions:
ls
exit
fi
VERFOUND=`ls | grep $1 | head -n 1`
if [ '$VERFOUND' != '$1' ]; then
BASE='`basename $0`'
echo Error: Could not change JRE-- version $1 not installed!
echo Run $BASE without arguments to see a list of installed versions.
exit 127
fi
Download Jre For Mac
echo You must now enter your Mac OS X password to change the JRE.
sudo ln -fhsv $1 Current
